Smart meter rollout delayed for four years
The government has delayed the deadline for smart energy meters to be rolled out from 2020 to 2024. Customers can decline having a smart meter fitted, but energy firms must have offered them to all UK households by the end of 2024.
Three year enquiry into violation of basic employment rights
The Resolution Foundation, an independent think-tank focused on improving the living standards for those on low to middle incomes, is launching a three-year investigation of labour market enforcement, looking at where workers are missing out on basic entitlements to a payslip, holiday and the minimum wage. In particular, the Foundation is looking at the hotels and restaurants sector.
Ovo agrees to buy SSE’s retail business for £500m
Ovo, the UK’s largest independent energy supplier, is expected to complete its purchase of SSE’s retail business in late 2019 or early 2020. It will take on SSE’s 3.5 million customers.
Sainsbury’s ended no till trial
Sainsbury’s has ended a no till trial, saying customers were not ready for it. Shoppers could only scan their products and pay for them through an app. However, a manned till has been reintroduced for those wanting to use cash or card.
